Nadia Bakhurji, the first woman in Saudi history to run for public office.


 

Nadia Bakhurji, a 37-year-old architect and mother of two, has announced she will run for a municipal council seat for Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in elections scheduled for next spring. She’s the first woman in Saudi history to run for public office. As part of political reforms it is proposing, the Saudi government announced municipal elections would be held for the first time in 40 years. Whether women will be allowed to vote or not has not yet been decided.
